How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue here is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty audi a1 key much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good news is they are very cheap and easy to find, especially if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of your Audi's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how audi spare keys fast or slow the car's crankshaft is spinning.
